Dear participants, dear passers-by,

Thank you for joining us today, for listening, for standing together in solidarity. Today, on the Transgender Day of Remembrance, we pause to honor the lives of trans and gender-diverse individuals lost to violence and hate in 2024.

Heute, am 20. November, ist der TRANSGENDER TAG DES GEDENKENS, der GEDENKTAG FÜR DIE OPFER VON TRANSPHOBIE.

Dieser Gedenktag findet weltweit jedes Jahr am 20. November statt.

/engl/

Today, the 20th of November, is the TRANSGENDER DAY OF REMEMBRANCE, the MEMORIAL DAY FOR THE VICTIMS OF TRANSPHOBIA.

This day of remembrance takes place worldwide every year on November the 20th. We commemorate trans*, non-binary, and gender-diverse people who were murdered, killed by homicide, or committed suicide over the past year.

/dt/

/engl/

On today’s Trans Day of Remembrance, we come together not only to mourn their untimely departure but also to celebrate their resilience, bravery, and the immeasurable impact they’ve left upon our world.

In diesem laufenden Jahr 2024 rd. 350.

/engl/

During the past year – from October 23 to September 24 – we moun over 400 reportet murders of transgender individuals worldwide. In this year 2024 round 350.

We know this number barely scratches the surface of the truth. Misgendering, erasure, and underreporting obscure the full extent of this crisis. In the United States alone, at least 30 trans and gender-expansive individuals were killed, the majority of them Black trans women. Their deaths highlight the brutal intersection of racism, sexism, and transphobia. The number of unreported cases is likely to be much higher. The cases we can quote here today are only known to the public because they were reported by friends from the communities or discovered in the course of research conducted by community activists. Only very few countries collect statistical data on homicides of trans* people. Germany is not one of them.

/dt/

– Erinnert an Sie

/engl/

These individuals were daughters, sons, siblings, friends, and mentors. Their dreams, talents, and love were stolen by a society that too often fails to recognize their humanity. We remember them not as statistics, but as cherished members of our global family.

Say their names. – Learn their stories. – Remember them.

/engl/

Today is a day of mixed emotions. For some, it is a time of solemn reflection; for others, the pain may feel too overwhelming. If you need a moment to step back or choose not to participate fully, know that we hold space for you, too. We also gather here for those who cannot be with us—those whose voices have been silenced, and those who are still fighting for safety, dignity, and recognition.

/engl/

In many countries, trans* and non-binary people are under even greater threat by transphobia and transphobic structures than in Germany. For many, this is a reason to flee to Germany. Not being cisgender is considered a capital crime in some countries. Providing support to trans* and non-binary people is punishable by law. Selling you food or renting you a flat can be considered support.

Many trans* people flee to neighbour countries, as to the Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya. Home to over 200,000 asylum seekers, from the surrounding countries, Kenya is the only country in the region that offers asylum to those seeking protection from homophobic and transphobic persecution. Yet the legal and social situation in Kenya is little better, but queer people at the camp face daily violence and discrimination. Even lethal violence. Amnesty International has published a shocking report. We know of one trans* person who has been killed. Our international support and solidarity is called for. You can find out more here.

/engl/

The violence trans communities face is not confined to physical acts. It is enshrined in policies that strip away rights, embedded in social structures that devalue trans lives, and perpetuated by misinformation that sows division. The rising tide of anti-trans rhetoric and legislation contributes to this cycle of harm.

Yet amidst the grief, we celebrate resilience. The courage of those who dare to live authentically inspires us. It reminds us that even in the face of hate, there is hope. There is power in unity, in love, and in resistance.

Too often the perpetrators can be found in places which are supposed to be safe and welcoming. Not only Strangers alone, but acquaintances, friends, family, partners. And not always the cause is directly obvious. Often times, social and economic circumstances lead to the death of trans* and non-binary people, as a consequence of transphobic structures and dynamics. The suicide rate among trans* and non-binary people is significantly higher than the societal average as well.

We demand better. We demand laws that trust and empower trans individuals to make decisions about their own lives. We demand protections that reflect the realities of those most marginalized within our communities — Black and brown trans individuals, trans sex workers, and trans migrants.

/dt/

–  Erinnert an Sie.

/engl/

We stand here today not just to mourn but to honor and continue the work of those we’ve lost. We must build a world where trans lives are not only recognized but celebrated, where living authentically is not an act of defiance but a fundamental right.

Let us strive for a future where we no longer need a day of remembrance, a future where trans people can grow old in safety and joy.

Say their names. – Learn their stories. – Remember them.

/dt/
